Three numbers tell the story of search this year. 68% of US Google searches now end without a click to any website. Roughly half the sources AI assistants cite change within a month. A Facebook ad click costs 14% less than it did last year while a lead costs the same. Each of these shifts changes where a professional services firm should put its effort, and each has a specific response. Here is what moved and what to do about it before the year closes.
How many Google searches end without a click?
Between January and April 2026, 68% of US Google searches ended without a click to any website, up from 60% in 2024. The count covers desktop and mobile web searches. For most searches, the results page is now the destination.
Google's AI Mode passed one billion monthly users in May 2026. It is not the default Search experience, and Google has said so directly. People still choose to enter it.
When a prospective client searches for a chiropractor, an estate attorney, or a med spa, the answer Google assembles on that page comes from three places: the Google Business Profile, the reviews, and the text on the website. If most searches end on that page, the actions the profile reports, meaning calls, direction requests, and website clicks, deserve as much attention as site traffic.
Why AI answers name different businesses each month
Ask ChatGPT the same question in March and again in April, and the sources behind its answer will probably differ. One analysis of about 80,000 prompts per platform found 40% to 60% of cited websites changed within a single month, and 70% to 90% changed over six months. Another tracked 82,619 prompts for 17 weeks and measured the share of new sources each week at 74% in ChatGPT Search, 56% in Google AI Mode, and 5% in Google AI Overviews.
Where the citations come from matters as much as how fast they turn over. A 30-day test that followed one new brand across six AI engines found third-party list articles produced 85.8% of its AI mentions, while the brand's own list article produced 14.0% and press releases produced 0.2%. The same test found that after competitors were added by name to the brand's own article, mentions of that page rose from 4 to 49. One brand is a small sample, so treat these numbers as a direction to test rather than a rule.
AI visibility is a monthly check, not a one-time project. Find the lists, directories, and comparison pages that AI answers cite for your field and your city, pursue placements there, and recheck them monthly, because the cited set keeps moving.
How AI search reads a service page
The research on page format is split. One analysis of 18,012 ChatGPT citations found 44.2% pointed at the first 30% of a page, and cited passages were twice as likely to contain a question, most often in a heading. A separate study of 216,524 pages found question-style headings underperformed, averaging 3.4 citations against 4.3 for pages without them.
Word count divides the research the same way. The larger of two studies, covering 353,799 pages, found pages between 500 and 2,000 words performed best, and pages over 5,000 words were cited less often than pages under 500. The other found pages over 2,900 words averaged 5.1 citations against 3.2 for pages under 800.
Four practices hold up across all of it. Put the direct answer in the first paragraph. Keep key facts in visible page text rather than in images, PDFs, or collapsed sections. Use a question heading where the section answers a question clients actually ask. Let the service set the length instead of a word-count target.
Near-duplicate pages carry a separate risk. Sites hit by Google's August 2026 spam update lost between 14,000 and more than 200,000 ranking queries. This is why we write every service and area page with its own local detail and FAQs.
Paid media: cheaper clicks, the same cost per lead
Benchmarks from about 1,830 US Facebook and Instagram campaigns across more than 20 industries put the average traffic-campaign click at $0.60 this year, down 14%, with a 1.93% click-through rate. Lead campaigns tell a different story: $27.39 per lead, essentially unchanged from last year, at $1.80 per click.
Clicks got cheaper and leads did not, which means the difference sits on the page after the click. We send paid traffic to a dedicated service page with a click-to-call button and a four-field form, never to the homepage.
Search behavior inside Google Ads is shifting as well. From January 2025 to August 2026, one- and two-word queries fell from 42% to 24% of impressions while three- and four-word queries rose from 33% to 48%. Longer, more conversational queries now carry most of the volume. Phrase match keywords with a maintained negative keyword list capture the longer queries that contain the service and the city while filtering out job seekers and DIY searches.
Google Business Profile: what changed
Collected info. In September 2026 Google added a Collected info tab to Business Profiles. It shows details Google gathered about your business through its automated calls, texts, and WhatsApp messages, and owners can review and delete incorrect entries.
Q&A removed. Google retired the Business Profile Q&A section in late 2025 and replaced it with an AI "Ask" button that answers from owner-provided answers, reviews, and profile information. Separately, Google launched Ask Maps in March 2026 in the US and India, a Gemini feature that answers questions from Maps data and reviews.
The profile's weight. In the leading 2026 survey of local search specialists, Google Business Profile signals were estimated at 32% of local pack and Maps ranking. The figure is a survey estimate, and it is the largest single share in the survey.
Photos and geotags. A controlled test of geotagged photos found no measurable ranking effect, and Google strips the location data on upload. Google has stated there is no need to geotag images for SEO. Upload real photos of your office, your team, and your work, and skip the geotagging step.
Reviews. Google's own guidance states that positive reviews and helpful replies can help a business stand out. Our standard is a reply to every review within 48 hours, using the client's first name and the service performed.
Reddit and TikTok for local research and reach
Reddit. Reddit reported 130.3 million daily active users in its Q2 2026 earnings, and it licensed its data to Google and to OpenAI in 2024. Local and industry subreddits are a direct record of the questions prospective clients ask, the prices they expect, and the objections they raise. Those questions become the FAQ section on a service page.
TikTok. TikTok introduced its Local Feed in February 2026, a home-screen tab rolling out gradually in the US to users 18 and older, with location sharing optional and off by default. An analysis of 1.1 million TikToks found videos longer than 60 seconds received 43.2% more reach and 63.8% more watch time than videos of 30 to 60 seconds. A walkthrough of a first visit or consultation fits both.
Five steps for Q4
- Open your Google Business Profile, check the Collected info tab, and delete anything incorrect.
- Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode for your service in your city. Record which businesses and which sources each one names, and repeat the check monthly.
- Request inclusion on the third-party lists and directories those answers cite for your field.
- Put the direct answer in the first paragraph of each main service page, and move key facts out of images and collapsed sections into visible text.
- Send ad traffic to a dedicated service page with click-to-call and a four-field form.
